The coaching carousel has already cranked up for the 2023-24 NFL season, and several head coaches are already lining up to climb aboard a painted pony and ride out of town for good.
It’s the nature of professional football these days. The pressure to win immediately rarely warrants more than three seasons to establish a consistent, high level of play.
Legal NFL betting sites create odds for seasonal award winners, and they also produce props on negative achievements. The following odds have been posted at BetUS, listing head coaches in the order of most to least likely to get fired during the upcoming NFL season.

Leading the odds are Mike McCarthy of the Dallas Cowboys, Todd Bowles of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Ron Rivera of the Washington Commanders.
Will Mike McCarthy Get Fired?
2023-24 will be McCarthy’s fourth with the Cowboys. Dallas missed the playoffs during his debut season, but they followed up by winning the NFC East and earning a Wild Card spot the next two years.
Considering Dallas’ routine failure in the NFL postseason over the past 25 years, you’d think owner Jerry Jones would be thrilled with McCarthy’s results. However, Jones could be poised to hit the panic button due to the recent ascension of the Philadephia Eagles.
The Cowboys are projected to finish second in the current NFC East futures, and the odds for betting on the NFL Playoffs imply they’ll make the postseason as a wild card team. This hardly sounds like a scenario where Mike will get the ax first.
Will Todd Bowles Get Fired?
Coach Bowles is somehow on the hot seat, even though he won the NFC South Division last year. Of course, that was accomplished with a win-loss record of 8-9 and Tom Brady under center.
With Brady now retired, the franchise could be in line for an identity change which places Bowles at risk should he falter during September and October. Bettors should consider that the NFC South Division is incredibly weak, so coach Bowles could easily keep the Bucs competitive at least through mid-season.
While these projections aren’t promising for Bowles’ future, he could last through the season, making him a potential bad bet.
Will Ron Rivera Get Fired?
Like McCarthy, 2023-24 will be Ron Rivera’s fourth campaign in D.C. He took the team to the NFL Playoffs in his first season and finished third and fourth in the NFC East over the last two years.
The Commanders are now owned by Josh Harris, who purchased the team this spring for $6.05 billion from Dan Snyder. Harris also owns a stake in the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils.
Coach Rivera has put in solid work and gotten the best out of limited talent during his tenure, but the combination of new ownership and his being connected to an unpopular prior regime could place Ron’s job in jeopardy if he falls behind .500 early in 2023.
Could it be Super Bowl or bust for Rivera in 2023? Possibly. Gamblers can win $7 for each dollar wagered on Rivera if bets are placed now and he gets fired first.
