Saquon Barkley Could Be The First Running Back Super Bowl MVP In 27 Years

On Sunday, the 59th all-time Super Bowl will be played between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs. Over the course of the previously played 58 games, a quarterback has been named the Super Bowl MVP 32 times.

There have been only seven running backs to win the SB MVP, but Saquon Barkley of the Eagles is projected to win if Philadelphia hoists the Lombardi this Sunday evening.

2025 NFL Super Bowl LIX MVP Winner

  • Patrick Mahomes +115
  • Saquon Barkley +225
  • Jalen Hurts +350
  • Travis Kelce +1600
  • Xavier Worthy +2800
  • AJ Brown +2800
  • Chris Jones +5000
  • Kareem Hunt +5000
  • DeVonta Smith +5000
  • Jalen Carter +6500
  • Dallas Goedert +8000

The Chiefs are the current SB LIX betting favorites, which is reflected in the above MVP odds as KC quarterback Patrick Mahomes is ranked ahead of all other players with a +115 moneyline.

This season, Barkley became the 9th RB in the history of the league to rush for over 2,000 yards.

2,000 Yard Rushers In The NFL

  • 1973 – O.J. Simpson, – 2,003 yards
  • 1984 – Eric Dickerson – 2,105 yards
  • 1997 – Barry Sanders – 2,053 yards
  • 1998 – Terrell Davis – 2,008 yards
  • 2003 – Jamal Lewis – 2,066 yards
  • 2009 – Chris Johnson – 2,006
  • 2012 – Adrian Peterson – 2,097 yards
  • 2020 – Derrick Henry – 2,027 yards
  • 2024 – Saquon Barkley – 2,005 yards

He rested during Week 17. Otherwise, he would have likely topped the all-time record held by Eric Dickerson.

Saquon Barkley Regular Season Rushing Stats For 2024-25

  • 345 carries, 2,005 yards, 5.8 yards-per-carry, 13 touchdowns

What’s more impressive is that Barkley has stepped his game up during the NFL Playoffs, increasing his yards-per-game and per-carry averages.

Saquan Barkley Postseason Rushing Stats

  • 66 carries, 442 yards, 6.7 yards-per-carry, 5 touchdowns

Much of the Eagles’ success this year can be attributed to Barkley’s efforts, but are oddsmakers undercutting the value that QB Jalen Hurts provides to his game?

Outside of the Baltimore Ravens’ Lamar Jackson, there’s no better-rushing quarterback in the league than Hurts. The threat of Hurts running the ball is what helps open up the rushing lanes for Barkley.

The game’s Most Valuable Player award is only for the given contest, so no credit is offered for any work leading up to the SB. No matter what happens, Hurts will handle the ball on more snaps than Barkley and could easily contribute more to the win.

We say this because of the enormous odds that Super Bowl prop bets are offering for Hurts to win. His +350 moneyline will award bettors 3.5-to-1 wins to anyone laying some action on Hurts to win MVP.

Running Backs Who Have Won The SB MVP

  • Larry Csonka – SB VIII – 145 yards rushing, 2 TDs
  • Franco Harris – SB IX – 158 yards rushing, 1 TD
  • John Riggins – SB XVII – 166 yards rushing, 1 TD
  • Marcus Allen – SB XVIII – 191 yards rushing, 2 TDs
  • Ottis Anderson – SB XXV – 102 yards rushing, 1 TD
  • Emmitt Smith – SB XXVIII – 132 yards, 2 TDs
  • Terrell Davis – SB XXXII – 157 yards, 3 TDs

To sweeten the pot a little, YouTube influencer and celebrity boxer Jake Paul has offered Saquon a $750,000 Ferrari if he earns the SB MVP.

“If you win the Super Bowl MVP, I think you can do it, brother. Have so much love for you… I will give you one of my Ferraris if you win Super Bowl MVP.”

The MVP winner is usually given a brand-new car by a game sponsor, but Barkley may have to expand his garage if he wins at LIX.
